Teaching Old Dogs New Tricks: Grants Available to Help Senior Dogs

Raleigh, North Carolina—For old dogs in need of new homes, the adage, “Every dog has its day” has never been truer, as The Grey Muzzle Organization calls for grant applications to fund programs for at-risk senior dogs all around the country.

“We envision a world where no old dog dies alone and afraid,” says Lisa Lunghofer, Ph.D., executive director of The Grey Muzzle Organization. “We’re looking forward to awarding dozens of grants to help thousands of deserving old dogs spend their golden years in loving homes.”

Animal shelters, rescue groups, sanctuaries and other nonprofit organizations whose work includes helping senior dogs are invited to apply for Grey Muzzle grants. Grant applications will be accepted from February 16 – March 16, 2018. Grants typically range from $2,500 to $7,500. 

Since it began ten years ago, The Grey Muzzle Organization has awarded more than $1 million in grants to 108 nonprofit organizations in 32 states. These grants provide senior dogs with medical and dental care, adoption, foster and hospice programs, and assistance to prevent them from being surrendered to shelters, among other lifesaving programs. 

Citing a survey of Grey Muzzle grantees that reported more people are adopting older dogs, Lunghofer feels the situation for senior dogs has recently improved, but noted, “Many wonderful old dogs are waiting in shelters right now for somebody like you to adopt them.”

“Opening your heart and home to a senior dog is a deeply rewarding experience. Older dogs who have lost their families are especially grateful for a second chance to love and be loved again,” she said.

The dogs aren’t the only ones who are grateful. “We’re very thankful for the support of our donors, who make it possible for Grey Muzzle to fund many worthy groups working hard to save and improve the lives of senior dogs nationwide.”
