Headquartered in Raleigh, NC, the SPCA of Wake County (SPCA Wake) is an independent nonprofit animal welfare agency that works in over 50 counties across the state to transform the lives of pets and people through protection, care, education and support. Funded by charitable support, they provide vital community programs that pick up where local government agencies leave off. Each year, they adopt out over 4,000 pets, many of whom were transferred to them from our high-risk, under-resourced shelter partners. They also offer low-cost spay/neuter services to reduce animal suffering and provide people-focused programs that keep pets with their families and out of shelters.

SPCA of Wake County (SPCA Wake) will use their grant to offer enhanced veterinary services to senior dogs in their adoption program. With this support, they will provide dental care, osteoarthritis treatments, and thorough health screenings, all aimed at improving the health and comfort of senior dogs. By reducing medical barriers, SPCA Wake hopes to increase adopters’ confidence in choosing a senior dog, ultimately leading to quicker adoptions and shorter shelter stays for these deserving pets.

The grant will help dogs like Wesley, a senior dog rescued by SPCA Wake after being found abandoned in a cage. Despite being heartworm-positive and having impaired vision, Wesley is receiving the care he needs and will soon find a loving home.

    About Better Together

Thanks to a generous grant from a private foundation, Grey Muzzle launched “Better Together” –an innovative grant initiative to promote lifesaving partnerships between open-admission shelters and other animal welfare organizations. These partnerships are vital in ensuring senior dogs receive the care and attention they deserve.

This is about more than funding. It’s about creating and sharing knowledge. As part of our Learning Partnership, grantees will collaborate, sharing their progress, challenges, and successes. With guidance from the Grey Muzzle team, they’ll gather insights that will help shape future initiatives and spread best practices nationwide.
