Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter
    Funded in 2021

Once nicknamed the “underdog,” the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) has been working tirelessly to make big strides for Baltimore’s homeless animals. Guided by compassion and dedication to our community, we have cared for more than 170,000 animals since our inception in 2005 along with thousands more that we have prevented from becoming homeless and having to enter our doors. Since taking over the city shelter 16 years ago, we are proud to have increased the save rate for homeless animals from 2% to over 90%. Today, BARCS provides animal care and adoption services, spaying and neutering public education and outreach, resources for families with financial instability so they can keep their pets, and so much more. Through the BARCS Love Lasts Forever program, adoption fees are always waived for senior pets 5 years and older.

The BARCS Intake Prevention Program team spends time on the phone with thousands of Baltimoreans each year, providing resources so they may keep their beloved pets at home with them. The primary reason for surrender is the family’s inability to pay for necessary medical care, especially when senior dogs are concerned. With the Grey Muzzle grant BARCS can provide vital medical care to more underserved senior dogs so they can happily remain with the families who love them.
